The dam's nutritional needs peak during lactation, particularly in the third and fourth weeks when the puppies' demand for milk is greatest. Free-choice feeding of a calorie-dense diet allows the dam to consume the large quantities of food she needs to maintain her body condition while producing milk for a growing litter. Fresh water must be available at all times, as milk production requires substantial fluid intake.

Allow the dam to rest and bond with her puppies in a calm environment during the early postpartum period. Limit visitors and unnecessary handling of the puppies during the first week, as excessive disruption can stress the dam and interfere with maternal behavior. As the dam recovers and the puppies grow, she can gradually resume short outings and light exercise, rebuilding her condition over the weeks following delivery.

Breeding is not appropriate for every Shikoku, and choosing not to breed a dog that does not meet the highest standards for health, temperament, and conformation is one of the most responsible decisions a breeder can make.
