Labrador Retrievers experience a dramatic period of physical growth between three and twelve months of age, transforming from small, clumsy puppies into powerful, athletic young dogs. During this stage, a Labrador can gain two to four pounds per week, and their skeletal structure, muscle mass, and coordination develop at a pace that demands careful attention from their owner. Understanding what is normal during this rapid growth phase helps prevent both overfeeding and underfeeding, each of which carries health risks for a large breed.
Growth plates in the long bones of the legs remain open throughout the juvenile period and typically do not close until twelve to eighteen months of age. Because these growth plates are softer than mature bone, they are vulnerable to injury from excessive impact or repetitive stress. Activities that involve jumping from heights, extended running on hard surfaces, or forced exercise should be limited until the dog's skeletal system has matured. Allowing a young Labrador to self-regulate its play on soft, varied terrain is a safer approach.
Owners should track their Labrador's weight regularly and compare it against breed-standard growth curves. A healthy juvenile Labrador should have a visible waist when viewed from above and ribs that are easily felt but not prominently visible. Labradors are genetically predisposed to obesity, and the eating habits and body condition established during this stage often set the trajectory for the dog's entire life. A veterinarian can help assess body condition score and recommend dietary adjustments as the puppy grows.
By twelve months, most Labrador Retrievers have reached close to their adult height, though they continue to fill out with muscle and chest depth until approximately two years of age. Males tend to be noticeably larger and broader than females by this point. The adolescent Labrador may look somewhat lanky or disproportionate at certain stages, which is entirely normal and resolves as the body catches up with itself.
