Breeding a Kishu Ken is a serious commitment that should be undertaken only after careful preparation, thorough health screening, and an honest assessment of whether the breeding will contribute positively to the breed's future. The Kishu Ken is a rare and culturally significant breed, designated as a National Treasure in Japan, and preserving its health, temperament, and type requires that breeding decisions be made with the long-term welfare of the breed firmly in mind.

Both the sire and the dam should be fully health tested before any breeding takes place. At minimum, this includes screening for hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, and eye conditions through examinations by board-certified veterinary specialists. Additional testing may be recommended based on conditions known to occur in the breed or identified through the dog's pedigree. Only dogs that have passed all relevant health screenings should be considered for breeding.

Physical maturity is a prerequisite for breeding readiness. During the first half of pregnancy, the developing embryos are tiny and the dam's nutritional needs remain close to her normal adult requirements. Overfeeding during early pregnancy can lead to excessive weight gain that complicates delivery. Maintain her regular diet and exercise routine during this period, avoiding only extremely strenuous activities. Whelping Preparation

This temperature dip is one of the most reliable predictors of imminent whelping and allows you to prepare for the arrival of the litter with reasonable certainty.

Postpartum Care

The first days after whelping are a critical period for both the Kishu Ken dam and her newborn puppies. Immediately after delivery, assess each puppy for signs of health, including strong vocalizations, active nursing reflexes, and normal body temperature. Count the placentas to ensure each puppy's placenta has been delivered, as retained placental tissue can cause serious infection in the dam.

The dam will experience a vaginal discharge called lochia for several weeks following delivery. This discharge is initially dark red or greenish-black and gradually transitions to a lighter reddish-brown before tapering off. A foul-smelling, purulent, or excessively heavy discharge is abnormal and may indicate uterine infection, which requires immediate veterinary attention. Nutritional demands on the nursing dam are enormous, often requiring two to three times her normal caloric intake at peak lactation. Continue feeding the high-calorie puppy or performance food used during late pregnancy, and offer multiple meals throughout the day to accommodate her increased needs. Fresh water should be available at all times, as milk production requires substantial fluid intake. If the dam is reluctant to eat, try warming the food slightly or offering especially palatable options to stimulate appetite.

The Kishu Ken is typically an attentive and capable mother, but first-time dams may need guidance and gentle support. Allow her to manage the litter with minimal interference while monitoring from a respectful distance for signs of trouble. Excessive handling of the puppies in the first few days can cause stress in a protective dam, so limit interactions to health checks, weight monitoring, and ensuring all puppies are nursing successfully.
