Most Golden Pheasant juveniles are ready for outdoor housing between six and eight weeks of age, by which point they are well feathered and capable of thermoregulating in moderate temperatures. The cautious but curious chick gradually develops into a more independent and sometimes reactive adolescent. During this period, flight responses become stronger, territorial instincts begin to surface, and the birds become increasingly aware of their social standing within the group.

Maintaining regular, calm interaction with juvenile Golden Pheasants is important for long-term manageability. Continue the socialization practices established during the brooder phase — spending time near the aviary, speaking quietly, and offering treats. Avoid making sudden movements or allowing unsupervised visitors, especially children or unfamiliar dogs, near the aviary. A single fright response can cause the birds to injure themselves by flying into the enclosure walls or ceiling at full speed.

Golden Pheasants are ground-dwelling birds that spend the majority of their time walking, foraging, and resting on the floor of the enclosure, so ground-level design is as important as the overall footprint.

The substrate of the aviary floor significantly impacts bird health. Natural earth or sand substrates allow for dust bathing and foraging, both of which are critical behaviors. If the aviary floor tends to become muddy during wet weather, consider adding a layer of coarse sand or pea gravel in high-traffic areas to improve drainage. Standing water and mud create ideal conditions for bacterial and parasitic infections. Predator protection cannot be overstated. The aviary must be fully enclosed with welded wire mesh of no greater than one-inch by one-inch spacing to exclude rats, weasels, and snakes. Larger mesh is inadequate — weasels can pass through surprisingly small openings and will kill multiple birds in a single night. The mesh should extend underground or be fitted with a wire apron buried at least twelve inches outward from the base of the walls to prevent digging predators. Health Management During Growth

The juvenile period is a time of rapid growth and immune system development, making consistent health management practices essential. Establish a regular deworming schedule in consultation with your avian veterinarian. Intestinal parasites including roundworms, cecal worms, and capillaria are common in aviary-housed birds and can cause significant morbidity in growing juveniles. Fecal examinations every three to four months allow you to tailor your parasite control program to the actual parasite burden rather than relying on arbitrary treatment schedules.

External parasites are another concern that intensifies as birds move to outdoor housing. Mites, lice, and feather lice can cause irritation, feather damage, and secondary infections. Examine the birds periodically by checking under the wings, around the vent, and along the feather shafts for signs of infestation. Dust bathing is one of the bird's natural defenses against ectoparasites, so providing a consistently available dust bath area of fine, dry soil or sand mixed with food-grade diatomite is both enriching and functionally protective.

Coccidiosis remains a threat during the juvenile period, particularly after the transition to outdoor housing where the birds encounter soil organisms. Maintaining dry conditions, rotating ground areas where possible, and monitoring droppings for signs of blood or abnormal consistency are all important preventive measures. Birds that have been raised on medicated starter feed may be particularly vulnerable after the switch to unmedicated grower rations, as their acquired immunity may be limited.

Keep detailed records of each bird's weight, condition, and any treatments administered. A juvenile Golden Pheasant that is not gaining weight at a rate consistent with its peers, that has dull or ragged plumage, or that is consistently less active than others in the group may be experiencing a subclinical health issue that warrants investigation. Early detection and treatment are far more effective and less costly than addressing advanced disease.

Common Juvenile Challenges

Feather pecking is one of the most common behavioral problems encountered in groups of juvenile Golden Pheasants. This vice can range from mild plucking of feather tips to severe damage that exposes bare skin and draws blood. Causes include overcrowding, boredom, nutritional deficiencies (particularly protein or methionine), and inadequate environmental complexity. Addressing feather pecking requires identifying and correcting the underlying cause rather than simply separating individual birds, although removing severely pecked birds to allow recovery is often necessary in the short term.

Flying injuries are a persistent concern with juvenile Golden Pheasants. When startled, these birds launch upward with explosive force and can impact the ceiling of the enclosure hard enough to cause head trauma, neck injuries, or scalp lacerations. Using soft netting rather than rigid wire for the aviary roof helps absorb the impact. Some keepers of flighted pheasants choose to install netting at approximately six feet high even within taller structures, creating a padded barrier that prevents full-speed vertical flight. Keeping the aviary environment calm and predictable reduces the frequency of panic flights.

Digestive disturbances during dietary transitions are relatively common. A too-rapid switch from starter to grower feed, the introduction of unfamiliar supplemental foods, or ingestion of toxic plants within the aviary can cause loose droppings, crop stasis, or loss of appetite. Any dietary change should be made gradually over a period of five to seven days. Inspect the aviary thoroughly before introducing the birds and remove any plants that may be harmful, including yew, rhododendron, azalea, and foxglove.

Aggression between males typically begins to surface toward the end of the juvenile period, especially as the birds approach sexual maturity between eight and twelve months of age. While juvenile sparring is usually harmless, escalating aggression that results in injury or persistent harassment of subordinate birds requires intervention. Separating maturing males into individual enclosures or small compatible groups is the most effective solution and should be planned for in advance so that appropriate housing is available when needed.
