The English Springer Spaniel enters its juvenile phase around eight weeks of age and continues growing rapidly through the first year. During this period, puppies experience dramatic changes in body proportion, muscle development, and coordination. Most Springers reach approximately half their adult weight by four months and approach their full height by nine to ten months, though they continue to fill out and develop muscle mass well into their second year. Growth rates can vary within the breed, with field-bred lines sometimes maturing slightly faster than show-bred lines.
Monitoring growth through regular weigh-ins and body condition assessments helps ensure a young Springer is developing at a healthy pace. Rapid weight gain can place excessive stress on developing joints and bones, which is a particular concern in a breed predisposed to hip and elbow dysplasia. Conversely, a puppy that falls consistently behind expected growth benchmarks may have an underlying nutritional deficiency or health issue that warrants veterinary evaluation.
The Springer's distinctive coat also undergoes significant changes during adolescence. The soft puppy coat gradually gives way to the adult double coat, which includes the longer, feathered hair on the ears, chest, legs, and belly that the breed is known for. Regular grooming should be introduced early in the juvenile stage so the puppy becomes accustomed to brushing, combing, and the sound of clippers. Establishing a positive grooming routine now prevents struggles later when the adult coat requires more frequent maintenance.
Teething is a major milestone during the juvenile period, with adult teeth replacing baby teeth between four and six months of age. This process can cause discomfort and a strong urge to chew. Providing appropriate chew toys helps redirect the puppy's need to gnaw while protecting household items. Hard objects that could fracture emerging teeth should be avoided, and any retained baby teeth that have not fallen out by six months should be evaluated by a veterinarian.
