Postpartum Care

The first few days after delivery are a critical period for both the Doberman dam and her litter. The mother should be monitored closely for signs of postpartum complications, including excessive bleeding, foul-smelling discharge, fever, lethargy, or refusal to eat. A mild, dark reddish-brown discharge called lochia is normal for up to three weeks after whelping, but bright red bleeding or a foul odor indicates a problem that requires immediate veterinary attention.

The dam's nutritional demands during lactation are enormous, often exceeding those of pregnancy by a significant margin.
