Breeding a Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a significant commitment that begins long before the first mating. Assessing breeding readiness involves evaluating the physical maturity, health status, temperament, and genetic background of both the prospective sire and dam. A Chesapeake Bay Retriever should not be bred before reaching full physical and mental maturity, which typically occurs around two years of age for both males and females.

Health clearances are a non-negotiable prerequisite for any responsible Chesapeake Bay Retriever breeding program. At minimum, both the sire and dam should have current evaluations for hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and progressive retinal atrophy. Genetic testing for exercise-induced collapse and degenerative myelopathy is also recommended for this breed. During the first half of pregnancy, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever dam requires no significant changes to her diet or routine. Essential supplies include clean towels, bulb syringes for clearing airways, hemostats for clamping umbilical cords if the dam does not sever them, iodine for treating cord stumps, a kitchen scale for weighing puppies, a notebook for recording birth times and weights, a thermometer, and the contact information for your veterinarian and the nearest emergency veterinary clinic.

The dam's rectal temperature typically drops below 99 degrees Fahrenheit approximately 12 to 24 hours before the onset of active labor. Begin taking her temperature twice daily during the last week of pregnancy to watch for this drop. Other pre-labor signs include restlessness, nesting behavior, panting, loss of appetite, and seeking seclusion. Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are generally strong whelpers, but first-time mothers may be anxious and benefit from the calm, reassuring presence of their primary handler during the process.

Postpartum Care

The immediate postpartum period requires careful attention to both the dam and her puppies. After the last puppy is delivered and the dam has passed all placentas, allow her to rest with her litter in the clean whelping box. She should begin nursing the puppies within the first hour and will typically clean and stimulate each newborn without assistance. Offer her fresh water and a small, easily digestible meal once she has settled, as the whelping process is physically exhausting.

Monitor the dam closely for the first 48 to 72 hours for signs of postpartum complications. A moderate dark reddish-brown vaginal discharge is normal for several weeks after whelping, but discharge that is bright red, foul-smelling, green, or purulent may indicate a retained placenta or uterine infection and requires immediate veterinary attention. Watch for signs of eclampsia, a potentially fatal condition caused by dangerously low blood calcium, which can manifest as restlessness, panting, stiff gait, muscle tremors, or seizures, most commonly in the first two to three weeks of nursing.

The nursing Chesapeake Bay Retriever dam has enormous nutritional demands, often requiring two to three times her normal caloric intake depending on litter size. Continue feeding the high-calorie puppy food or performance diet introduced during late pregnancy, and allow her to eat as much as she needs to maintain her body condition. Weight loss during lactation is normal to a point, but the dam should not become visibly thin or depleted. Ensure constant access to fresh water, as milk production requires substantial fluid intake.

The dam's behavior toward her puppies provides important information about her health and the litter's well-being. A Chesapeake Bay Retriever mother that is attentive, calm, and actively nursing and cleaning her puppies is exhibiting normal maternal behavior. A dam that ignores her puppies, seems reluctant to nurse, shows aggression toward the litter, or appears excessively restless may be experiencing pain, illness, or insufficient milk production. Address any concerns promptly with your veterinarian, as neonatal puppies are entirely dependent on their mother during these critical first days.

Responsible Breeding Ethics

The Chessie is not an ideal match for every household, and honest communication about the breed's exercise requirements, independent temperament, protective instincts, and grooming needs helps ensure that puppies are placed in homes prepared for the commitment.
