Postpartum Care

The first several days after whelping are a critical period for both the dam and her puppies. The mother's primary needs include rest, high-quality nutrition, adequate hydration, and a clean, comfortable environment in which to nurse and bond with her litter. Caloric demands are at their highest during lactation, often exceeding two to three times the dam's normal maintenance intake, depending on litter size. Puppies may refuse to nurse from an affected gland due to changes in the milk's taste or consistency. Gradual reintroduction of exercise can begin once the dam has recovered from the physical demands of whelping, typically within the first week or two.
