Some weight loss during lactation is normal, but rapid or excessive loss indicates that caloric intake is not keeping pace with demand and the feeding plan needs adjustment.

Mammary glands should be checked daily for signs of mastitis, which presents as hard, hot, swollen, or discolored teats. Mastitis is painful for the dam and can compromise the quality and safety of the milk supply. Mild cases may respond to warm compresses and frequent nursing on the affected gland, while more severe cases require antibiotic therapy. Puppies should be monitored to ensure they are nursing evenly from multiple teats.

The dam's emotional well-being deserves attention alongside her physical recovery. Most Australian Shepherd mothers are attentive and nurturing, but first-time dams can sometimes be anxious, overly restless, or uncertain about their role.
