Both the queen and the stud should be fully mature, in excellent health, and thoroughly screened for genetic and infectious diseases before any breeding is planned. While Somali females may reach sexual maturity as early as five to six months, most reputable breeders wait until the queen is at least twelve to eighteen months old and has reached full physical and emotional maturity before allowing her first breeding.

Genetic testing is a non-negotiable prerequisite for responsible Somali breeding. Both prospective parents should be tested for pyruvate kinase deficiency, a hereditary condition known to occur in the breed that affects red blood cell function and can cause chronic anemia. Testing for progressive retinal atrophy, which can lead to blindness, is also essential. Queening Preparation

As the expected delivery date approaches, preparation becomes the key to a smooth queening experience. The box should be large enough for the queen to stretch out comfortably but contained enough to prevent kittens from wandering. Sides should be high enough to keep neonatal kittens safely inside while allowing the mother easy entry and exit.

Line the queening box with clean, washable bedding such as fleece pads or towels that provide warmth and traction for newborn kittens. Assemble a queening supply kit that includes clean towels, a bulb syringe for clearing mucus from kitten airways if needed, unwaxed dental floss and blunt scissors for tying and cutting umbilical cords if the queen does not sever them, a small kitchen scale for weighing kittens, a heating pad or microwaveable heat disc, and kitten milk replacer in case supplemental feeding becomes necessary. In the days leading up to delivery, the queen may exhibit nesting behavior such as seeking out secluded spaces, rearranging bedding, and becoming more clingy or restless than usual. A slight drop in body temperature, from the normal range of approximately 100 to 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit down to 98 to 99 degrees, often occurs 12 to 24 hours before labor begins. Introduce the queen to the prepared queening box and encourage her to use it, but be prepared for the possibility that she may choose her own location despite your preparations.

Postpartum Care

The hours and days following delivery are a critical period for both the queen and her litter. After all kittens have been delivered and are nursing, allow the queen to rest undisturbed with her litter. Verify that each kitten has latched and is nursing successfully, that the queen has delivered a placenta for each kitten, and that she appears alert and attentive to her newborns. The nursing queen's nutritional demands are enormous, often exceeding her pregnancy requirements. A mild, odorless reddish-brown vaginal discharge is normal for up to three weeks after delivery. Any discharge that is bright green, foul-smelling, or accompanied by fever or lethargy should prompt an immediate veterinary visit. The queen's weight, appetite, and demeanor should be monitored daily during the postpartum period, and any concerns should be addressed promptly rather than adopted as a wait-and-see approach.

Kitten placement should be approached with the same seriousness as the breeding decisions themselves. Responsible breeders screen prospective homes through applications and conversations, provide spay-neuter contracts for kittens sold as companions, retain the right to take back a cat if the placement does not work out, and provide lifetime support and guidance to their kitten buyers.
