Pre-breeding health screening is particularly important for the Manx. Both the queen and the stud should undergo a thorough veterinary examination that includes spinal assessment, hind-limb evaluation, and testing for common feline infectious diseases such as feline leukemia virus and feline immunodeficiency virus. Genetic counseling from a veterinarian or breed specialist familiar with the Manx gene is highly recommended, as the genetics of taillessness carry significant implications for litter viability.
The Manx gene is an autosomal dominant gene, meaning that only one copy is needed to produce the tailless phenotype. However, kittens that inherit two copies of the gene — homozygous Manx — do not survive, typically dying in utero early in development. This means that every Manx-to-Manx breeding results in a statistically smaller litter, as roughly one-quarter of the conceived kittens are not viable.
