The box should be large enough for the queen to stretch out fully with room for the kittens, with sides high enough to contain newborns but with a low opening that allows the mother to enter and exit easily. Most queens handle the birthing process independently and prefer minimal intervention. Your primary role is to observe quietly, ensure the environment remains calm and warm, and intervene only if a problem arises. Familiarize yourself with the stages of feline labor so you can recognize normal progression versus signs that veterinary assistance is needed. The interval between kittens can range from fifteen minutes to over an hour, and the queen may pause labor for several hours before delivering the remainder of a large litter.

Postpartum Care

The hours and days following delivery are a critical period for both the queen and her newborn kittens. Monitor the queen for signs of complications such as retained placentas, excessive bleeding, fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, or refusal to nurse her kittens. A post-delivery veterinary checkup within twenty-four to forty-eight hours is strongly recommended, particularly for first-time queens or if there were any difficulties during labor. Limit visitors and handling of the kittens during the first two weeks, as excessive disturbance can cause the queen to become anxious, refuse to nurse, or attempt to move her litter to a location she perceives as safer. Brief, gentle handling of the kittens for health checks and socialization can begin around the end of the first week, but always wash your hands first and respect the queen's cues.

Watch for signs of mastitis, an infection of the mammary glands that can occur during lactation. Symptoms include swollen, hard, or reddened mammary glands, pain when nursing, fever, and decreased milk production. Mastitis requires prompt veterinary treatment with antibiotics and supportive care. Also monitor each kitten's weight gain daily to ensure all members of the litter are nursing successfully. A kitten that fails to gain weight or loses weight may need supplemental feeding with kitten milk replacer while the underlying cause is addressed.

The current reality of pet overpopulation means that breeding without a clear purpose and a commitment to the welfare of every offspring is ethically indefensible, regardless of how desirable the breed may be.

Health testing is the foundation of ethical breeding, and reputable breeders do not cut corners. Publishing health screening results openly, sharing information with other breeders and breed organizations, and retiring cats from breeding programs when health issues are identified all contribute to the long-term welfare of the breed. The financial cost of comprehensive health testing, veterinary care, proper nutrition, and responsible kitten raising is substantial, and breeders who prioritize profit over these investments are contributing to the health problems that responsible breeders work to eliminate.

Kitten placement should be handled with the same care as every other aspect of the breeding program. Screen potential adopters thoroughly through applications, interviews, and references. Ensure that buyers understand the commitment involved in owning a Maine Coon, including the costs of veterinary care, grooming, nutrition, and the cat's expected lifespan. A contract that includes a spay or neuter requirement for pet-quality kittens, a return clause requiring the breeder to take back any cat that the owner can no longer keep, and clear health guarantees protects both the kittens and the breed.

Limit the frequency of breeding to protect the queen's long-term health. Most ethical breeding guidelines recommend no more than one to two litters per queen per year, with careful attention to her recovery and body condition between pregnancies.
