Breeding Readiness

Responsible Korat breeding begins long before a mating ever takes place. Both the queen and the stud should be fully mature, in excellent health, and free of genetic conditions that could be passed to offspring. While Korats may reach sexual maturity as early as six to nine months, breeding should not be attempted until the queen is at least 18 months to two years of age and has reached full physical and emotional maturity. Premature breeding places undue stress on an underdeveloped body and can result in complications for both mother and kittens.

Genetic health testing is a non-negotiable prerequisite for any responsible Korat breeding program. The breed carries a known risk for gangliosidosis, a fatal lysosomal storage disease that exists in two forms, GM1 and GM2. DNA testing can identify carriers, and no carrier-to-carrier matings should ever be planned. Both prospective parents should also be screened for feline leukemia virus and feline immunodeficiency virus, and cardiac evaluation through echocardiography is strongly recommended.

Beyond genetics, both cats should demonstrate sound temperament, good body condition, and conformance to the breed standard. The Korat gene pool is relatively small compared to more popular breeds, making thoughtful outcross planning and pedigree analysis essential to maintaining genetic diversity while preserving the breed's defining characteristics. The breeding environment itself should be carefully prepared. Ensure that the queen is current on all vaccinations well in advance of breeding, as vaccines should not be administered during pregnancy. The Heat Cycle

Korat queens are seasonally polyestrous, meaning they cycle repeatedly during periods of increasing daylight, though indoor cats with consistent artificial lighting may cycle year-round. The estrous cycle in cats consists of several phases, with the estrus or heat phase being the period during which the queen is receptive to mating. Estrus typically lasts five to seven days but can range from three to fourteen days depending on the individual.

The signs of estrus in a Korat queen are usually unmistakable. She may become unusually vocal, producing loud, persistent calling that can be quite different from her normal vocalizations. She may roll on the floor, assume a lordosis posture with the hind end elevated and tail deflected when touched along the back, tread her hind legs, and become exceptionally affectionate or restless. Some queens also spray urine to signal their availability to potential mates.

Cats are induced ovulators, meaning that the physical act of mating triggers the release of eggs from the ovaries. Multiple matings over the course of the heat period increase the likelihood of successful ovulation and conception. If ovulation occurs but fertilization does not, the queen will enter a pseudopregnancy that typically lasts 30 to 45 days before cycling again. If ovulation does not occur, the queen will usually return to estrus within one to three weeks.

Tracking the queen's cycles with a detailed log is valuable for planning the optimal breeding window. Note the start date, duration, and intensity of each cycle, along with any behavioral observations. This record helps predict future cycles and identify any irregularities that might warrant veterinary evaluation. If a queen fails to cycle, cycles irregularly, or shows signs of persistent estrus, consult a veterinarian to rule out hormonal or reproductive abnormalities.

Pregnancy & Gestation

Feline gestation lasts approximately 63 to 67 days, with most Korat queens delivering around day 65. Confirmation of pregnancy can be achieved through veterinary palpation at approximately 17 to 25 days post-mating, ultrasound from about day 25 onward, or radiography after day 45 when fetal skeletons have calcified sufficiently to be visible. Ultrasound has the advantage of confirming fetal viability through detection of heartbeats, while radiography provides the most accurate count of expected kittens.

During the first few weeks of pregnancy, outward changes may be minimal. The queen may show a slight increase in appetite and may become somewhat quieter than usual. By the fourth week, the nipples begin to enlarge and pinken, a change known as pinking up. Gradually increasing abdominal size becomes apparent from week five onward, and the queen's appetite will increase significantly as the kittens grow and demand more nutrients.

Nutrition during pregnancy is critical. Transition the queen to a high-quality kitten food by the fourth week of pregnancy, as the higher calorie and nutrient density of kitten formulas supports the demands of fetal development and the queen's increasing metabolic needs. Feed freely during the last trimester, as the queen's food intake may increase by 25 to 50 percent. Ensure constant access to fresh water and avoid any dietary supplements unless specifically recommended by your veterinarian.

Monitor the pregnant queen for signs of complications throughout gestation. Vaginal discharge, especially if green, foul-smelling, or bloody before active labor begins, is abnormal and requires immediate veterinary attention. Lethargy, persistent vomiting, refusal to eat, or signs of pain should also prompt an urgent veterinary consultation. Most Korat pregnancies proceed without complications, but preparedness and vigilance are essential.

Queening Preparation

As the expected delivery date approaches, prepare a quiet, warm, and private queening area where the queen can give birth and care for her kittens undisturbed. A large, clean box or enclosed space lined with soft, washable bedding provides an ideal nesting environment. Place the queening box in a low-traffic area of the home at least one to two weeks before the expected due date so the queen can become familiar and comfortable with the space.

Assemble a birthing supply kit in advance that includes clean towels, a bulb syringe for clearing airways, sterile scissors and dental floss or hemostats for cord emergencies, a digital scale for weighing kittens, kitten milk replacer and bottles in case supplemental feeding is needed, a heating pad or hot water bottles, and your veterinarian's emergency contact information. Having these supplies organized and accessible reduces stress during what can be an unpredictable process.

In the days leading up to delivery, the queen may display nesting behavior, seeking out secluded spots, rearranging bedding, and becoming restless or clingy. Her body temperature may drop slightly below 100 degrees Fahrenheit within 24 hours of labor onset. Some queens experience a decrease in appetite in the final day before delivery. These are all normal pre-labor signs that indicate birth is imminent.

Korat queens are generally competent and instinctive mothers, but first-time queens may benefit from calm, quiet observation during delivery. Resist the urge to intervene unless there is a clear problem. Know the warning signs that require veterinary assistance: active straining for more than 30 minutes without producing a kitten, more than two hours between kittens when more are expected, a kitten stuck in the birth canal, excessive bleeding, or a queen that becomes weak or unresponsive during labor.

Postpartum Care

The postpartum period is a critical time for both the queen and her litter. In the hours following delivery, confirm that all placentas have been passed, as a retained placenta can cause serious infection. The queen will typically eat some or all of the placentas, which is a normal instinctive behavior that provides nutrients and reduces scent that could attract predators in the wild. Count placentas against the number of kittens to ensure none are retained.

The queen's nutritional needs peak during lactation, often exceeding even her pregnancy requirements. Continue feeding a high-quality kitten food in generous quantities and ensure unlimited access to fresh water. A nursing queen may consume two to three times her normal caloric intake to support milk production for a growing litter. Monitor her body condition closely, as some queens lose weight rapidly during heavy lactation periods despite eating well.

Watch for signs of postpartum complications in the queen. Mastitis, an infection of the mammary glands, presents as hot, swollen, painful teats and may be accompanied by fever and lethargy. Metritis, an infection of the uterus, causes foul-smelling vaginal discharge, fever, loss of appetite, and neglect of the kittens. Eclampsia, caused by dangerously low blood calcium levels, produces muscle tremors, stiffness, panting, and seizures. All of these conditions are veterinary emergencies requiring immediate professional treatment.

Allow the queen to care for her kittens with minimal interference while monitoring from a respectful distance. Ensure the environment remains calm, warm, and clean. Brief, gentle handling of the kittens for daily weight checks and health assessments is acceptable and also begins the socialization process, but avoid excessive disruption that could stress the queen and interfere with bonding and nursing.

Responsible Breeding Ethics

Breeding Korats carries a profound responsibility to the breed, to the individual animals involved, and to the kittens that will be produced. The Korat is a rare breed with a limited gene pool, and every breeding decision has the potential to either strengthen or weaken the breed's long-term health and genetic diversity. Responsible breeders approach each pairing with careful consideration of pedigrees, health test results, temperament, and breed standard conformance.

Every kitten produced should have a secure, loving home waiting for it before the breeding takes place. Responsible breeders maintain waiting lists, screen potential adopters carefully, and provide ongoing support and guidance to new owners throughout the cat's life. A commitment to taking back any cat that an owner can no longer keep, at any age and for any reason, is a hallmark of ethical breeding practice.

The financial realities of responsible breeding should be understood clearly. When accounting for genetic testing, health screening, premium nutrition, veterinary care, registration fees, emergency preparedness, and the time investment required for socialization and placement, responsible breeding is rarely a profitable endeavor. Breeders who cut corners on health testing, veterinary care, or kitten socialization to reduce costs are putting animals and buyers at risk.

Finally, responsible breeders contribute to the broader Korat community through mentorship, education, and participation in breed organizations. They remain transparent about health issues within their lines, share knowledge with newcomers, and advocate for the welfare of the breed as a whole.
