Proestrus lasts one to two days and is characterized by increased affection, restlessness, and the beginnings of vocalization. The Javanese's naturally vocal personality can make proestrus signs particularly pronounced — the queen may become unusually clingy, rub against furniture and people with increased intensity, and begin the rolling and treading behaviors that escalate during full estrus. She is not yet receptive to the male during this phase.

Estrus, the phase of true receptivity, typically lasts four to seven days in the Javanese. During this period, the queen actively seeks mating and displays unmistakable behaviors including lordosis (flattening the front of the body with the hindquarters elevated), persistent loud calling, and treading of the hind feet. Javanese queens in estrus are famously vocal, and the calling can be intense and continuous. Queening Preparation

Preparing for the birth — called queening in cats — should begin at least two weeks before the expected delivery date. Set up a queening box in a warm, quiet, dimly lit area of the home where the queen feels secure. The box should have sides high enough to contain the newborn kittens but low enough for the queen to enter and exit easily. Line it with clean, soft, washable bedding that can be changed frequently after the birth.

Active labor typically produces the first kitten within an hour of strong contractions beginning. Kittens may arrive anywhere from 15 minutes to two hours apart. Postpartum Care

The hours and days immediately following delivery are critical for both the queen and her kittens. Verify that each kitten is nursing effectively within the first two hours and that the queen has expelled a placenta for each kitten born. Retained placentas can cause serious infection and require veterinary treatment. The queen will typically eat some or all of the placentas, which is normal feline behavior driven by instinct.

The queen's nutritional demands peak during lactation, exceeding even the caloric needs of late pregnancy. Continue feeding high-quality kitten food in quantities that meet her appetite, which may be two to three times her normal pre-pregnancy intake. Ensure fresh water is always available within easy reach of the nesting area, as lactation places tremendous demands on hydration. Watch for signs of postpartum complications in the queen. Mastitis presents as hot, swollen, painful mammary glands and may cause the queen to refuse nursing. Eclampsia, caused by dangerously low blood calcium, produces muscle tremors, stiffness, fever, and can progress to seizures if untreated. Metritis, an infection of the uterus, causes foul-smelling discharge, fever, lethargy, and appetite loss. All of these conditions are veterinary emergencies that require immediate professional treatment.

Allow the queen to manage the kittens with minimal interference during the first week, stepping in only when a problem is apparent. Javanese queens are typically attentive and competent mothers, but first-time mothers may need reassurance and a calm environment to find their rhythm. Handle the kittens briefly each day for weighing and health checks, but avoid extended separation from the queen during the early days. The queen's comfort and confidence directly affect her ability to care for her litter effectively.

Responsible Breeding Ethics

Responsible Javanese breeding requires a commitment that extends far beyond producing kittens. Every breeding decision should be guided by the goal of improving the breed's health, temperament, and conformation while ensuring the welfare of every individual cat and kitten involved. This means breeding only cats that have been thoroughly health-screened, temperament-evaluated, and assessed against the breed standard by knowledgeable mentors or judges.

The Javanese is a breed with a relatively small gene pool, and genetic diversity is a concern that responsible breeders must actively manage. Working with a breed mentor, maintaining detailed pedigree records, and carefully calculating coefficients of inbreeding help prevent the concentration of genetic disorders. Outcrossing to approved breeds within the Oriental family, where permitted by registering organizations, can introduce healthy genetic variation while maintaining breed type.

Every breeder should have ironclad agreements in place with kitten buyers that include spay and neuter requirements for pet-quality kittens, return-to-breeder clauses if the owner can no longer keep the cat, and clear expectations about veterinary care, housing, and socialization. Screening potential homes thoroughly — including home visits when possible — protects kittens and ensures they enter environments prepared for the Javanese's specific needs for interaction, stimulation, and companionship.

The emotional and financial costs of responsible breeding are substantial. Genetic testing, veterinary care, quality nutrition, emergency preparedness, and the time investment required for proper socialization of kittens add up significantly. Responsible breeders accept that they may not profit from litters and are prepared to absorb unexpected costs including cesarean deliveries, sick kittens, and queens that require additional postpartum care.
