Breeding British Shorthairs responsibly begins long before a mating takes place. Both the queen and the stud should be fully mature, in excellent health, and screened for the genetic conditions that affect the breed. While British Shorthair females may reach sexual maturity as early as six to nine months of age, most reputable breeders wait until the queen is at least eighteen months to two years old before her first breeding. This allows her skeleton, muscles, and organs to reach full development, reducing the risks associated with pregnancy and delivery.
Pre-breeding health screening is non-negotiable. At minimum, both the queen and stud should be tested for feline leukemia virus and feline immunodeficiency virus and returned negative results. DNA testing for polycystic kidney disease should confirm that both cats are clear. Echocardiographic screening for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, performed by a veterinary cardiologist, should be current for both parents. Blood typing is also essential, as British Shorthairs carry a relatively high incidence of type B blood. Mating a type B queen with a type A stud can result in neonatal isoerythrolysis, a life-threatening condition in which the queen's antibodies destroy the kittens' red blood cells through colostrum.
Beyond genetic and health testing, the temperament and breed standard conformance of both cats should be carefully evaluated. Responsible breeding aims to produce kittens that are healthy, well-tempered, and true to the breed's defining characteristics. Cats with known temperament issues, significant conformational faults, or untested health backgrounds should not be bred, regardless of their visual appeal.
Establishing a relationship with a mentor breeder and becoming active in the breeding community provides invaluable guidance, particularly for first-time breeders. Breed clubs and registries often offer educational resources, mentorship programs, and access to a network of experienced breeders who can offer practical advice and support throughout the process.
