Assemble a queening kit that includes clean towels, sterile scissors and hemostats for cord emergencies, unwaxed dental floss for tying off umbilical cords if necessary, a bulb syringe for clearing mucus from kitten airways, a digital kitchen scale for weighing newborns, and the phone number for your veterinarian and the nearest emergency veterinary clinic. Having these supplies organized and accessible prevents scrambling during what can be a fast-moving process.

In the days leading up to delivery, the queen may exhibit nesting behaviors such as rearranging bedding, seeking seclusion, and becoming restless. Her body temperature may drop slightly — from a normal of approximately 101 to 102 degrees Fahrenheit to below 100 degrees — within twenty-four hours of labor onset. Appetite often decreases in the final day or two. These are normal signs that labor is approaching and should prompt you to stay close and attentive.

Most Abyssinian queens deliver without complication, but you should know when to intervene. Labor is considered problematic if the queen strains actively for more than thirty minutes without producing a kitten, if more than two hours pass between kittens when more are expected, if the queen appears exhausted or in distress, or if a kitten is visibly stuck in the birth canal. Postpartum Care

The first few days after delivery are a critical period for both the queen and her kittens. The queen needs rest, warmth, excellent nutrition, and a calm environment to recover from delivery and establish successful nursing. Continue feeding the kitten-formula diet she was on during pregnancy, and increase portions as her milk production ramps up — a nursing queen may need two to three times her normal caloric intake depending on litter size.

Monitor the queen for signs of postpartum complications. Metritis, an infection of the uterus, can develop within the first week after delivery and presents as fever, foul-smelling vaginal discharge, lethargy, and decreased interest in the kittens. Eclampsia, a life-threatening drop in blood calcium, can occur during heavy lactation and manifests as muscle tremors, stiffness, panting, and disorientation. The queen should be passing a dark, reddish-brown vaginal discharge for up to three weeks after delivery. This is normal and represents the clearing of uterine contents. The discharge should gradually decrease in volume and lighten in color. If it suddenly increases, becomes bright red, or develops a foul odor, contact your veterinarian. The queen should also be expelling all placentas — one for each kitten. A retained placenta can cause serious infection, so count placentas during delivery whenever possible.

Allow the queen to bond with her kittens without excessive interference, but do observe nursing sessions to confirm that all kittens are latching and feeding. Weigh each kitten daily to track growth. A healthy kitten should gain approximately seven to fifteen grams per day during the first two weeks. Any kitten that is not gaining weight or is being consistently pushed away from the nipples by larger siblings may need supplemental feeding with a kitten milk replacer.
