Both the male and female should undergo comprehensive veterinary examinations before breeding is attempted. As the pair bond strengthens and breeding season approaches, both birds may become more vocal, more territorial about their cage or aviary space, and more protective of each other. Aggression toward other birds or toward the caregiver is common during this period and should be anticipated. Copulation typically occurs on a perch, with the male mounting the female's back and both birds maneuvering their tails to achieve cloacal contact. Mating may occur multiple times daily over a period of several days to weeks before and during egg laying. The pair should have access to sturdy perching that provides secure footing during mating, as falls during copulation can injure either bird.

Not all courtship leads to successful mating or egg production. Stress, inadequate nutrition, insufficient privacy, or disruptions in photoperiod can all suppress breeding behavior even in a well-bonded pair. If a pair that has been together for an appropriate period shows no signs of progressing beyond casual affiliation, an avian veterinarian experienced in aviculture can evaluate both birds for underlying issues and offer management recommendations.

Egg Laying & Incubation

A breeding female Green-winged Macaw typically lays a clutch of one to three eggs, deposited at intervals of approximately two to three days. The eggs are white, relatively large, and must be incubated at a consistent temperature of around 99 to 99.5 degrees Fahrenheit for approximately 26 to 28 days before hatching. The entrance hole should be sized to admit the bird comfortably, and a layer of untreated wood shavings or similar substrate on the floor provides cushioning for the eggs. Signs of egg binding include straining, fluffed feathers, lethargy, sitting on the floor of the cage, and visible distress. Candling eggs at approximately seven to ten days of incubation allows the breeder to assess fertility and embryo development. A fertile, developing egg will show a network of blood vessels when a bright light is shone through the shell in a darkened room. Infertile eggs appear uniformly clear and should be removed after confirming their status on a second candling a few days later. Removing infertile eggs allows the hen to concentrate her energy on viable eggs.

Chick Rearing Decisions

One of the most consequential decisions in macaw breeding is whether chicks will be parent-raised, co-parented with human supplementation, or hand-raised from an early age. Each approach has significant implications for the chick's socialization, health, and eventual suitability as a companion or breeding bird. There is no single correct answer, and the decision should be based on the goals of the breeding program, the parenting ability of the specific pair, and the resources available to the breeder.

Parent-raised chicks benefit from natural feeding rhythms, social learning from adult birds, and immune system support from parental crop secretions. They tend to develop excellent flock social skills and may make better future breeding birds. However, parent-raised chicks that have limited human contact during the critical socialization window may be more fearful of people and less suitable as companion birds without extensive subsequent socialization work.

Hand-rearing from a young age produces chicks that are deeply bonded to humans and typically very tame, but it carries significant risks including aspiration, crop infections, and behavioral abnormalities stemming from lack of conspecific socialization. Hand-reared macaws may have difficulty relating to other birds later in life and are more prone to developing inappropriate bonding behaviors with their human caregivers.

A middle-ground approach—allowing parent birds to raise the chicks for the first two to three weeks and then transitioning to hand-feeding—combines many of the benefits of both methods. The chicks receive the immunological and nutritional advantages of parental feeding during the most vulnerable period while still being young enough to bond readily with human handlers. This co-parenting model requires close coordination and experienced timing but often produces the most well-rounded birds.

Postpartum & Recovery Care

After a breeding cycle, both the hen and the male require a recovery period to replenish their physical reserves. The hen in particular has invested enormous metabolic energy in egg production, incubation, and chick rearing. Calcium depletion, weight loss, feather deterioration, and general fatigue are common in breeding hens, and nutritional rehabilitation should begin immediately after the chicks are weaned or removed for hand-rearing.

A high-quality, nutrient-dense diet with emphasis on calcium-rich foods, protein sources, and fresh vegetables supports the hen's recovery. An avian veterinarian may recommend calcium supplementation or other targeted nutritional support based on post-breeding blood work. The hen should be monitored closely for signs of secondary health problems that can emerge after the stress of a breeding cycle, including reproductive infections, weight-related issues, and immune suppression.

The breeding pair should not be allowed to cycle into another clutch immediately. Continuous breeding without adequate recovery periods leads to chronic calcium depletion, reproductive organ damage, weakened immune function, and shortened lifespan. Most experienced aviculturists limit Green-winged Macaw pairs to one clutch per year at most, with some preferring to breed every other year to prioritize the long-term health of the adults.

After the breeding cycle is complete and the pair has recovered, nest box access should be restricted to prevent stimulation of another reproductive cycle. Returning the birds to a standard 12-hour light cycle, removing nesting materials, and resuming normal social routines with the caregiver helps transition the pair back to non-breeding behavior.

Responsible Breeding Ethics

Breeding Green-winged Macaws carries a weight of ethical responsibility that extends far beyond the immediate care of eggs and chicks. These birds live for decades, require enormous time and financial investment from their caregivers, and are frequently rehomed multiple times over their long lives when owners are unable to sustain the commitment. Anyone considering breeding macaws must honestly assess whether they are contributing to the welfare of the species or simply adding to an existing surplus of birds in need of homes.

Responsible breeders ensure that every chick produced has a well-screened, committed home waiting for it before breeding takes place. This means more than finding a buyer—it means educating prospective owners about the reality of living with a large macaw for potentially 60 or more years, including the noise, mess, expense, and emotional demands involved. Responsible breeders are willing to take birds back if the placement does not work out and maintain contact with buyers over time.

Genetic diversity and health are paramount concerns in captive breeding programs. Breeding closely related birds concentrates harmful recessive genes and weakens the captive population over time. Maintaining detailed lineage records, participating in cooperative breeding programs when available, and avoiding the temptation to breed whatever birds happen to be on hand all contribute to the genetic health of captive Green-winged Macaw populations.

The conservation context also matters. Green-winged Macaws face habitat loss and capture pressure in parts of their native range. While captive breeding does not directly address wild population declines, responsible aviculture that maintains healthy, genetically diverse captive populations and supports conservation organizations contributes to the broader effort to ensure the species' long-term survival. Breeding should never be undertaken purely for profit, novelty, or convenience.
