Nanday Conures reach sexual maturity between approximately one and two years of age, though reaching sexual maturity does not mean a bird is ready for breeding. Responsible breeders generally wait until both the male and female are at least two years old and in excellent health before pairing them for reproduction. Breeding birds that are too young increases the risk of complications, including egg binding in the hen and inadequate parental care from immature birds that have not fully developed the behavioral instincts needed to raise chicks successfully.
Before breeding is considered, both prospective parents should receive a thorough veterinary evaluation. This examination should include a complete physical assessment, blood work to evaluate organ function and nutritional status, and testing for common avian diseases such as Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease, polyomavirus, and chlamydiosis. Breeding birds that carry infectious diseases risks transmitting those diseases to chicks and to other birds in the household or aviary. Only birds with a clean bill of health should be considered as breeding candidates.
The pair's compatibility is another essential factor. Not all Nanday Conures will bond with a potential mate, and forcing an incompatible pairing can result in aggression, injury, and significant stress for both birds. Ideally, the birds should be introduced gradually in adjacent cages before being housed together, with careful monitoring for signs of mutual interest such as preening each other through the cage bars, calling to each other, and sharing food. Aggression, persistent avoidance, or fear responses indicate that the pairing is not appropriate.
Nutritional preparation should begin well before breeding commences. Both the male and female should be on a nutritionally complete diet with particular attention to calcium and vitamin A levels, which are critical for egg production and embryonic development. The hen's calcium reserves are heavily drawn upon during egg formation, and deficiency can lead to soft-shelled eggs, egg binding, and metabolic bone disease. Increased availability of calcium-rich foods and, if recommended by the veterinarian, supplementation should begin several weeks before the breeding season.
