The juvenile phase in cockatiels spans roughly from weaning at six to eight weeks through sexual maturity at around nine to twelve months of age. During this stretch, the bird undergoes a remarkable physical transformation from a somewhat awkward, partially feathered fledgling into a sleek, fully plumaged young adult. Growth in body length and wingspan continues steadily through the first few months, with most cockatiels reaching their full adult size by approximately four to five months of age, though they may continue to fill out slightly beyond that point.
One of the most visually dramatic events during this period is the first molt, which typically occurs between six and nine months of age. The soft, somewhat muted juvenile plumage is gradually replaced by adult feathers that display the full color and pattern characteristic of the cockatiel's particular mutation. In normal gray cockatiels, males begin to develop their bright yellow face and vivid orange cheek patches during this molt, while females retain the more subdued coloring with barring on the underside of their tail feathers. This first molt can be a stressful time for the bird, and caregivers should expect some changes in behavior and appetite.
Weight should be monitored regularly during the juvenile period, though the daily weigh-ins of the neonatal phase can be relaxed to weekly check-ins. A healthy juvenile cockatiel typically weighs between 80 and 110 grams, depending on its individual build and genetics. Sudden weight loss, persistent weight gain beyond the normal range, or a visibly protruding keel bone all warrant veterinary attention.
Feather quality is an excellent barometer of overall health during this growth phase. Healthy juvenile cockatiels produce smooth, well-formed feathers with vibrant coloring appropriate to their mutation. Stress bars, which appear as horizontal lines of weakness across feather vanes, indicate periods of nutritional deficiency or environmental stress during feather growth. Persistent feather abnormalities should be discussed with an avian veterinarian to rule out nutritional deficiencies, viral infections, or other underlying health issues.
