Bare-Eyed Cockatoo chicks hatch after an incubation period of approximately 24 to 26 days, emerging as small, nearly helpless creatures that depend entirely on external warmth and immediate nourishment. A freshly hatched chick weighs roughly 10 to 14 grams and is covered in sparse white down that offers minimal insulation. The eyes are sealed shut, the beak is disproportionately large relative to the head, and the legs lack the strength to support the body. Despite this apparent vulnerability, a healthy Bare-Eyed Cockatoo chick will display a vigorous feeding response when the skin near its beak is gently touched.
In breeder-managed clutches where the parents are rearing the chicks, the hen typically begins feeding within a few hours of hatching. Her crop secretions deliver essential nutrients and a microbial starter culture that colonizes the chick's gastrointestinal tract. If the parents are experienced and attentive, minimal human intervention is needed during this window, though the breeder should confirm that the chick's crop is filling by gently palpating the area below the throat. An empty crop eight or more hours after hatching signals that the parents may not be feeding and that supplemental hand-feeding should begin.
For hand-raised chicks, the first feeding should be delayed until the residual yolk sac has been absorbed, generally six to twelve hours post-hatch. Offering formula before the yolk is fully absorbed can overload the digestive system and cause bacterial fermentation in the crop. The initial hand-feeding should consist of a thin, well-mixed commercial parrot hand-rearing formula warmed to between 104 and 108 degrees Fahrenheit. Only a small volume is needed for this first meal, as the crop is tiny and easily overfilled.
The environment during these first hours is critical. The brooder must hold a steady temperature between 96 and 99 degrees Fahrenheit with relative humidity near 60 percent. Bare-Eyed Cockatoo chicks are somewhat hardier than some of the larger cockatoo species at hatching, but they remain extremely sensitive to temperature drops. A reliable digital thermometer and hygrometer placed at chick level inside the brooder provide the most accurate readings. Draft protection, dim lighting, and minimal disturbance round out the conditions that give a newborn the best start.
