Allow potential pairs to be housed within visual and auditory range of each other before direct introduction, and observe their interactions carefully. Mutual preening, feeding each other, and choosing to roost near one another are positive signs of pair bonding.
The breeder's own readiness is equally important. Breeding African Greys requires a quiet, dedicated space away from household disruption, the financial resources to cover veterinary care for the breeding pair and any chicks, the time commitment required for monitoring eggs and raising chicks, and a clear plan for placing chicks in responsible homes.
