This condition causes severe inflammation of the coelomic lining and surrounding tissues as the body reacts to the presence of yolk material, which is highly irritating to peritoneal surfaces. Without prompt treatment, the condition typically progresses to secondary bacterial infection, systemic sepsis, and death.
Ruptured follicles can affect any reproductively active female snake species and represents one of the more serious reproductive emergencies encountered in captive snakes. Ball pythons, boa constrictors, corn snakes, and other commonly bred species are frequently affected. The condition may occur as a complication of follicular stasis, where developing follicles fail to ovulate normally, or may result from trauma to a gravid or follicular female. In some cases, the cause remains undetermined despite thorough investigation.
The impact of ruptured follicles on snake health is severe and multifaceted. The yolk material released from ruptured follicles causes an intense inflammatory response in the coelomic cavity, similar to peritonitis in mammals. This inflammation is painful and triggers systemic illness. The protein-rich yolk provides an excellent growth medium for bacteria, making secondary infection nearly inevitable if treatment is delayed. Adhesions may form between organs, creating chronic complications. The metabolic demands of fighting this condition quickly exhaust the snake's resources.
Ruptured follicles requires veterinary intervention for any chance of survival, and the prognosis depends heavily on how quickly treatment is initiated. Surgical exploration and lavage of the coelomic cavity, often combined with ovariosalpingectomy, is typically necessary. Medical management alone is rarely successful except in the mildest cases. Early recognition of symptoms and immediate veterinary care by a snake-experienced veterinarian significantly improves outcomes for this serious condition.
