The snake kidney, unlike the compact bean-shaped kidneys of mammals, consists of elongated lobulated structures located in the posterior portion of the body cavity. These paired organs are responsible for filtering metabolic waste from the blood, maintaining electrolyte balance, and producing the semi-solid urate waste that characterizes reptilian excretion. When inflammation develops in these vital organs, their filtering capacity becomes compromised, leading to a cascade of metabolic disturbances that can severely impact the snake's health.
Nephritis affects snakes of all species and can develop from numerous underlying causes including bacterial infections, viral diseases, parasitic infestations, toxic exposures, and chronic husbandry deficiencies.
