While this infection is most commonly associated with bearded dragons and other agamid lizards, it can also affect snakes and various other reptile species. NIDO represents an emerging fungal pathogen of significant concern in reptile medicine due to its ability to cause progressive, destructive skin disease that can become invasive and even systemic. Unlike many opportunistic fungal infections that only affect immunocompromised hosts, N. guarroi appears capable of causing primary disease in otherwise healthy reptiles, making it a true pathogen rather than merely an opportunist.
In snakes, Nannizziopsis guarroi infections are diagnosed less frequently than in bearded dragons, but documented cases confirm that snakes are susceptible hosts. Various snake species have been affected, though the full range of susceptibility is not yet fully characterized. The infection can spread between reptiles through direct contact or via contaminated environmental surfaces and equipment, making quarantine and hygiene particularly important in collections. The relatively recent emergence of N. guarroi as a recognized reptile pathogen means that awareness among both keepers and veterinarians continues to grow, improving detection rates but also revealing the scope of the problem.

Initial skin lesions can spread across significant portions of the body surface, causing extensive scale damage, tissue necrosis, and secondary infections. In some cases, the fungus penetrates beyond the skin into deeper tissues, and systemic dissemination is possible though less common. The progressive nature of untreated NIDO means that early lesions that might seem manageable can advance to cause devastating tissue destruction. The infection also compromises the snake's protective integument, leading to fluid loss, increased susceptibility to other pathogens, and thermoregulatory difficulties.
Treatment of Nannizziopsis guarroi infection in snakes requires prompt, aggressive intervention combining appropriate antifungal therapy, wound care, and often surgical debridement of affected tissue. The prognosis depends heavily on how early treatment begins and how well the snake responds to therapy. Early-stage infections limited to superficial skin involvement have reasonably good prognosis with aggressive treatment, while advanced disease with deep tissue invasion or extensive spread carries more guarded prognosis. Snake-experienced veterinary care is essential, as accurate diagnosis requires appropriate testing and treatment protocols must be tailored to the individual case. The potential for NIDO to spread between reptiles makes diagnosis and management important not just for the individual animal but for protecting other reptiles in the collection or household.
