The snake's immune system, which is also temperature-dependent, may be compromised simultaneously, reducing its ability to fight secondary infections that commonly accompany maldigestion.
Fortunately, maldigestion is highly treatable when identified early and addressed appropriately through husbandry correction. The key to successful treatment lies in identifying and correcting the underlying cause, which is most commonly related to inadequate thermal gradients within the enclosure. Snake keepers should understand that proper digestion requires specific temperature ranges, and any snake showing signs of digestive difficulty should be evaluated by a veterinarian experienced in reptile medicine. Early intervention prevents the cascade of secondary complications that make advanced cases much more difficult to treat and significantly improves the prognosis for affected snakes.
