Ball pythons, boa constrictors, corn snakes, king snakes, and numerous other species have been diagnosed with lymphoma, with case reports spanning the diversity of commonly kept snakes. The immune system dysfunction that accompanies lymphoma makes affected snakes more susceptible to secondary infections, which may actually be the presenting complaint that leads to cancer discovery. Weight loss, lethargy, and appetite changes are common as the disease advances, reflecting the systemic impact of this malignancy on overall physiological function.
Treatment options for lymphoma in snakes remain limited compared to the extensive chemotherapy protocols available in mammalian medicine. While some experimental treatment approaches have been attempted, there is no established curative treatment for reptile lymphoma, and management focuses primarily on supportive care aimed at maintaining quality of life. Early detection through routine veterinary examination with a snake-experienced practitioner offers the best opportunity for implementing supportive measures before advanced disease significantly compromises the snake's condition. Owners should understand that lymphoma carries a guarded to poor prognosis in snakes, with treatment goals centered on comfortable survival rather than cure or remission.
