Fibroma and fibrosarcoma are neoplastic conditions arising from fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing connective tissue throughout the body. These tumors represent opposite ends of the behavioral spectrum, with fibromas being benign growths that remain localized and well-contained, while fibrosarcomas are malignant tumors capable of invading surrounding tissues and potentially metastasizing to distant organs. Both tumor types occur in snakes and are among the more commonly encountered neoplasms in reptile veterinary practice.
These tumors can affect any snake species, though reporting patterns may reflect the popularity of certain species in captivity rather than true differences in susceptibility. Fibromas typically appear as firm, well-defined masses beneath the skin that grow slowly and cause primarily mechanical problems if they become large enough to impede movement or feeding. Fibrosarcomas, by contrast, grow more rapidly, may invade surrounding muscle and bone, and can spread through the bloodstream or lymphatic system to internal organs, most commonly the lungs.
The impact on snake health differs significantly between the two tumor types. Fibromas often allow for excellent quality of life even when present, and surgical removal is frequently curative with minimal risk of recurrence. Fibrosarcomas pose a much greater threat, as their invasive growth pattern makes complete surgical removal challenging, and metastatic spread may occur even with aggressive treatment. Because early fibrosarcomas may closely resemble benign fibromas on external examination, histopathological examination of removed tissue is essential for accurate diagnosis and appropriate follow-up planning.
Early detection and treatment provide the best outcomes for both tumor types. Snake keepers should regularly examine their animals for any lumps, bumps, or swellings and seek veterinary evaluation for any masses that are discovered. A snake-experienced veterinarian can assess the mass characteristics, recommend diagnostic testing, and determine whether surgical intervention is appropriate. Because snakes hide illness effectively, behavioral changes suggesting pain or discomfort from an internal mass may not be apparent until the tumor is significantly advanced.
