This condition is one of the most common health problems encountered in captive snakes and is frequently associated with suboptimal husbandry conditions, particularly inappropriate substrate moisture, inadequate enclosure hygiene, and temperature management issues. The term dermatitis encompasses a spectrum of skin disorders that may have bacterial, fungal, environmental, traumatic, or multifactorial origins.
All snake species kept in captivity are susceptible to dermatitis, though species with specific environmental requirements may be at higher risk when their needs are not adequately met. Terrestrial species housed on substrates that retain excessive moisture, burrowing species kept in conditions that differ from their natural habitat, and aquatic or semi-aquatic species maintained in water of poor quality all face elevated risk. Ball pythons, boa constrictors, corn snakes, king snakes, and various python species commonly present with dermatitis in veterinary practice, often as a direct consequence of husbandry deficiencies.
