Cholelithiasis, commonly known as gallstones, refers to the formation of solid concretions within the gallbladder or bile ducts of snakes. These mineralized or cholite formations develop when components of bileâincluding cholesterol, bilirubin, and calcium saltsâprecipitate out of solution and aggregate into stone-like structures. While less commonly diagnosed in reptiles than in some mammalian species, cholelithiasis represents a significant clinical concern in captive snakes because these stones can obstruct bile flow, cause inflammation of the biliary system, and lead to serious secondary complications affecting digestion and overall health.
Gallstones can develop in any snake species maintained in captivity, though they are more frequently identified in snakes presented for evaluation of chronic digestive problems, anorexia, or incidental findings during imaging studies for other concerns. The condition appears to be associated with factors including chronic dehydration, dietary imbalances, prolonged fasting periods, and pre-existing biliary tract disease. Because snakes are ectothermic and have relatively slow metabolic rates, the formation of gallstones may occur gradually over extended periods before clinical signs become apparent. The condition may affect snakes of any age but is perhaps more commonly identified in adult and geriatric specimens.
The impact of cholelithiasis on snake health depends largely on the size, number, and location of the stones. Small stones within the gallbladder may cause minimal clinical signs and may be discovered incidentally. Larger stones or those that migrate into the bile ducts can cause partial or complete obstruction of bile flow, leading to bile stasis, gallbladder distension, inflammation (cholecystitis), and potential rupture in severe cases. Obstructed bile flow impairs fat digestion and absorption, affects metabolism of fat-soluble vitamins, and can lead to secondary liver damage. As with all conditions in ectotherms, the snake's environmental temperature directly influences the progression of disease and the snake's ability to compensate for biliary dysfunction.
With appropriate veterinary diagnosis and intervention, cholelithiasis can often be successfully managed, though treatment may require surgical removal of the gallbladder (cholecystectomy) in cases of obstruction, significant stone burden, or recurrent disease. Early detection through routine veterinary care and prompt attention to subtle clinical signs improves outcomes. As snakes characteristically hide signs of illness, owners should be vigilant for any changes in feeding behavior, activity level, or physical appearance, and should seek evaluation from a snake-experienced reptile veterinarian if concerns arise.
