Cannibalism in snakes refers to the consumption of one snake by another snake of the same or different species. This behavior can occur as normal predatory behavior in species that naturally prey on other snakes (ophiophagous species) or as aberrant behavior in non-ophiophagous species under conditions of stress, competition, or mistaken identity during feeding. Understanding the difference between species-typical ophiophagy and stress-induced cannibalism is crucial for preventing these often fatal incidents in captive snake collections.
Cannibalism is most commonly associated with ophiophagous species that actively hunt and consume other snakes as part of their natural diet. King snakes (genus Lampropeltis) are the most well-known ophiophagous snakes commonly kept in captivity, renowned for their consumption of other snakes including venomous species. King cobras are the largest ophiophagous snakes, feeding primarily on other snakes. Indigo snakes, mussuranas, and various other species also naturally consume snakes. For these species, cannibalism represents normal feeding behavior rather than aberrant psychology, and they will readily consume cage mates given the opportunity.
The impact of cannibalism is obviously catastrophic for the consumed snake, resulting in death. For the snake that consumed its cage mate, complications can include regurgitation if the consumed snake was too large, intestinal impaction, and transmission of any diseases or parasites carried by the prey snake. For keepers, a cannibalism incident represents the loss of an animal, emotional distress, and often guilt over a preventable tragedy. Understanding which species must never be cohabitated and recognizing risk factors for cannibalism in other species is essential knowledge for any snake keeper.
Prevention is the only effective management strategy for cannibalism, as once an incident occurs, the outcome is typically fatal and irreversible. Species known to be ophiophagous must never be housed with other snakes under any circumstances, including during breeding attempts which require careful supervision. Non-ophiophagous species that are cohabitated require careful monitoring for signs of stress or competition that could precipitate cannibalistic behavior. In most cases, housing snakes individually is the safest approach that eliminates cannibalism risk entirely.
