Bacterial endocarditis is a serious infection of the heart's inner lining (endocardium) and valves caused by bacterial colonization and proliferation within cardiac tissues. In snakes, this condition represents a significant threat to cardiovascular function and overall survival, as the infection can damage heart valves, interfere with normal blood flow, and serve as a source for ongoing bacterial spread throughout the body. While bacterial endocarditis is less commonly diagnosed in reptiles than in mammals, it occurs in snakes and should be considered in cases of unexplained systemic illness, particularly when other sites of infection are present.
Bacterial endocarditis can affect any snake species, though it is most commonly associated with individuals that have predisposing factors such as concurrent infections elsewhere in the body, immunocompromise from improper husbandry or underlying disease, or damage to cardiac tissues from previous conditions. The bacteria responsible for endocarditis typically reach the heart through the bloodstream, originating from primary infection sites such as respiratory infections, abscesses, mouth rot (stomatitis), scale rot, or other bacterial conditions. Snakes maintained in suboptimal conditions with chronic low-grade infections are at greatest risk for developing this secondary cardiac complication.
The impact of bacterial endocarditis on snake health is profound, as infection and damage to heart valves impair the heart's ability to pump blood effectively. Vegetative growths consisting of bacteria, inflammatory cells, and fibrin can form on valve surfaces, interfering with valve function and potentially breaking off to cause embolic events in distant organs. The continuous presence of bacteria in the circulation causes ongoing systemic inflammation and can lead to septicemia with multi-organ effects. Without treatment, bacterial endocarditis is typically fatal, and even with aggressive therapy the prognosis remains guarded.
Early detection of bacterial endocarditis is challenging due to the nonspecific clinical presentation and the internal nature of the infection. Snakes may show general signs of illness such as lethargy, anorexia, and weakness without obvious indication of cardiac involvement. Diagnosis requires a high index of suspicion, particularly in snakes with known bacterial infections elsewhere, and utilizes blood cultures, echocardiography, and other advanced diagnostics. Treatment involves prolonged courses of appropriate antibiotics along with correction of husbandry deficiencies and supportive care. Consultation with a snake-experienced veterinarian is essential for any snake showing signs of serious systemic illness.
