This opportunistic fungal pathogen is ubiquitous in the environment, found in soil, decaying vegetation, and organic matter, making complete avoidance impossible. In healthy snakes with competent immune systems, exposure to Aspergillus spores typically does not result in disease. However, when immune function is compromised by stress, improper husbandry, concurrent illness, or other factors, inhaled spores can germinate and establish infection, most commonly in the respiratory tract.
Aspergillosis can affect any snake species, though it is more frequently diagnosed in snakes experiencing immunosuppression from various causes. Ball pythons, boa constrictors, corn snakes, and other commonly kept species are all susceptible when conditions favor fungal colonization. The infection is not contagious between snakes in the traditional sense; rather, each affected snake has acquired the infection from environmental exposure. However, enclosures with excessive moisture, poor ventilation, and decaying organic substrate create conditions where Aspergillus proliferates, potentially exposing multiple snakes to heavy spore loads.
The impact of aspergillosis on snake health is significant and can range from localized respiratory infection to life-threatening disseminated disease affecting multiple organs. Respiratory aspergillosis causes progressive lung damage, leading to difficulty breathing, reduced oxygen exchange, and secondary bacterial infections. When the fungus disseminates through the bloodstream, it can establish infection in virtually any organ, including the liver, kidneys, and central nervous system. Disseminated aspergillosis carries a grave prognosis and is often fatal despite aggressive treatment.
Treatment of aspergillosis in snakes is possible but challenging, requiring prolonged antifungal therapy often lasting months. Early detection significantly improves outcomes, but the insidious onset and the tendency of snakes to hide illness until disease is advanced often means diagnosis comes late in the disease course. Prevention through optimal husbandry, including appropriate humidity levels, good ventilation, and clean substrate, represents the most effective approach. Any snake suspected of aspergillosis requires prompt evaluation by a snake-experienced veterinarian for diagnosis and development of an appropriate treatment plan.
