Guinea pigs demonstrate high susceptibility to yersiniosis, with the disease often referred to as pseudotuberculosis in this species due to the characteristic caseous lymph node lesions that grossly resemble tuberculosis. Chinchillas are similarly affected and may experience devastating losses in breeding colonies. Rabbits, hamsters, gerbils, and various other rodent species can also develop yersiniosis, though prevalence varies. Wild rodents serve as reservoir hosts, maintaining the organism in the environment and potentially transmitting it to captive animals through contaminated food, water, or direct contact.
The impact of yersiniosis on affected small mammals ranges from subclinical carriage to rapidly fatal disease depending on host factors, bacterial strain, and infectious dose. Chronic infections produce progressive weight loss, debilitation, and internal abscessation that may go unrecognized until animals are severely compromised. Acute presentations can result in death within days from overwhelming septicemia. The chronic wasting form is particularly insidious, with animals declining gradually over weeks to months while owners may not recognize the severity of the condition until it is far advanced.
Treatability of yersiniosis in small mammals is challenging, particularly in guinea pigs and chinchillas where the disease often proves fatal despite treatment attempts. The intracellular nature of the organism provides protection from antibiotics, and chronic infections involving caseous abscesses are difficult to resolve medically. Early detection and aggressive treatment offer the best chance of survival, but the tendency of small mammals to hide illness until disease is advanced frequently results in diagnosis being made too late for effective intervention. Prevention through proper husbandry, stress reduction, and biosecurity measures remains the most effective approach to managing this disease.
