Hamsters, gerbils, rats, and other small rodents fed inadequate commercial diets are at risk, as are ferrets and hedgehogs on improper diets. The condition has decreased in frequency with improved commercial diets but remains a concern when feeding practices deviate from recommendations.

Initially, subtle weakness and decreased activity may be the only signs, but continued deficiency leads to muscle degeneration, cardiac dysfunction, reproductive failure, and compromised immunity. In severe cases, sudden death can occur from heart failure. Because symptoms develop gradually, owners may not recognize the problem until significant damage has occurred.
Vitamin E and selenium deficiency is treatable when diagnosed early, with supplementation typically reversing symptoms and preventing further damage. However, permanent muscle or heart damage can result from prolonged deficiency, making prevention and early detection essential. An exotic veterinarian should evaluate any small mammal showing signs consistent with this condition, as diagnosis requires differentiating it from other causes of weakness and muscle problems. Treatment success depends on the extent of damage at the time of diagnosis and correction of the underlying dietary deficiency.
