Ulcerative dermatitis is a challenging and often frustrating skin condition that primarily affects mice, characterized by the development of chronic, non-healing skin ulcers typically located on the dorsal (back) surface of the body, particularly around the neck, shoulders, and between the shoulder blades. This condition has gained significant attention in laboratory mouse research due to its prevalence in certain inbred strains, particularly C57BL/6 mice, where it represents one of the most common reasons for animal removal from studies. Pet mice similarly develop this condition, creating distress for both the affected animals and their owners.
The condition is considered multifactorial, meaning no single cause can be identified in most cases. Rather, ulcerative dermatitis develops through a complex interaction of factors including pruritus (itching) from various causes, self-trauma through excessive scratching, bacterial secondary infection, environmental factors, and genetic predisposition. The characteristic pattern of lesions primarily in areas the mouse can reach with its hind feet for scratching reflects the self-induced nature of much of the tissue damage.
The impact of ulcerative dermatitis on affected mice is substantial, affecting both physical health and quality of life. Open wounds cause pain and create portals for systemic infection. Chronic lesions may become deeply ulcerated, exposing underlying muscle or bone in severe cases. Affected mice often show decreased appetite, weight loss, reduced activity, and social withdrawal. The persistent itching and discomfort associated with the condition causes ongoing distress even when lesions are managed.
Treatment of ulcerative dermatitis is notoriously difficult, with no single intervention consistently effective across all cases. A multimodal approach combining medical treatment, environmental modification, nail trimming, and sometimes surgical intervention offers the best chance of success. An exotic veterinarian experienced with mice should guide treatment decisions, as the condition requires patience, persistence, and willingness to try multiple approaches. While some cases resolve with treatment, others prove refractory and require ongoing management or quality-of-life decisions.
