Streptococcal infections encompass a group of bacterial diseases caused by various species of Streptococcus bacteria that affect small mammals. These gram-positive cocci are responsible for a wide range of clinical presentations, from localized abscesses and lymph node infections to severe systemic disease and septicemia. Different Streptococcus species show predilection for particular small mammal hosts, making this a significant concern across the entire spectrum of exotic pet rodents and other small mammals commonly kept in captivity.
Guinea pigs are perhaps most notably affected by streptococcal disease, particularly cervical lymphadenitis caused by Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus, which causes the characteristic swollen lymph nodes in the neck region commonly known as lumps. Chinchillas are similarly susceptible to this organism and may develop comparable presentations. Rats frequently harbor Streptococcus pneumoniae and other streptococcal species as part of their respiratory flora, which can cause disease under conditions of stress or immunosuppression. Hamsters, gerbils, and mice may also develop streptococcal infections, though perhaps less commonly than guinea pigs and chinchillas.
The impact of streptococcal infections on small mammal health ranges from mild, self-limiting localized infections to severe, life-threatening systemic disease. Localized lymph node abscesses may cause discomfort and difficulty eating if located in the cervical region but often respond well to treatment. Systemic spread can result in pneumonia, septicemia, meningitis, or infection of multiple organ systems with much more serious implications. The carrier state is common, meaning many animals harbor these bacteria without showing clinical signs until stress or other factors trigger active disease.
Treatability depends significantly on the form and extent of infection. Localized abscesses often respond well to a combination of surgical drainage and appropriate antibiotic therapy. Systemic infections require aggressive medical management and carry a more guarded prognosis. Early detection improves outcomes substantially, but the prey animal tendency to hide illness means many cases are not recognized until disease is advanced.
