Stomatitis may occur as a primary condition or secondary to various underlying diseases, dental problems, nutritional deficiencies, infections, or toxic exposures. Stomatitis can affect any small mammal species, as all possess oral mucous membranes susceptible to inflammation and damage. Hamsters, rats, mice, gerbils, ferrets, chinchillas, hedgehogs, sugar gliders, and degus can all develop this condition under appropriate circumstances. The prevalence varies depending on underlying cause, with certain triggers more common in specific species.
