This condition specifically targets the salivary glands, lacrimal glands (tear-producing glands), and Harderian glands located behind the eyes. The disease is named for its characteristic inflammation of these glandular structures, with "sialo" referring to saliva, "dacryo" referring to tears, and "adenitis" meaning gland inflammation.
SDAV is one of the most common viral infections seen in laboratory and pet rat populations worldwide. The virus spreads extremely rapidly through direct contact, aerosol transmission, and contaminated fomites such as bedding, food dishes, and cage materials. In colony settings, an outbreak can infect an entire population within days to weeks. While the virus primarily affects rats, it does not pose any known risk to humans or other household pets, making it species-specific in its transmission.
The impact of SDAV on affected rats can range from mild subclinical infection to severe, distressing symptoms that significantly affect quality of life during the acute phase. The most recognizable signs include dramatic swelling of the neck and face due to enlarged salivary glands, bulging eyes from inflammation of the Harderian and lacrimal glands, and the characteristic red porphyrin staining around the eyes and nose. While the acute phase can appear alarming to owners, the infection is typically self-limiting in otherwise healthy rats.
Despite its generally favorable prognosis in immunocompetent animals, SDAV requires proper veterinary assessment and supportive care to ensure affected rats remain comfortable and avoid secondary complications. An exotic veterinarian experienced with rats should evaluate any suspected cases, as the symptoms can mimic other serious conditions. Early intervention with supportive care can minimize complications such as eye damage, secondary bacterial infections, and respiratory distress.
