Skin tumors are among the most commonly encountered health conditions in pet rats and mice, particularly as these animals age beyond their first year of life. These growths can arise from any component of the skin or underlying subcutaneous tissues, including the epidermis, dermis, hair follicles, sebaceous glands, blood vessels, and connective tissues. The term encompasses a wide spectrum of masses ranging from completely benign growths that pose no health risk to aggressive malignancies capable of metastasis and life-threatening complications.
Rats are particularly predisposed to developing tumors of various types, with skin and subcutaneous masses being among the most visible and frequently diagnosed. Studies in laboratory rat populations indicate that tumor incidence increases dramatically with age, with many rats developing at least one mass by 18-24 months of age. Mice similarly develop skin tumors with age, though the specific tumor types and frequencies differ somewhat between species. Both sexes are affected, though certain tumor types show sex predilections related to hormonal influences.
The impact of skin tumors on rat and mouse health and quality of life varies tremendously depending on tumor type, size, location, and growth rate. Small, slow-growing benign masses may cause no significant problems and can be monitored without intervention. Conversely, rapidly growing tumors can reach enormous sizes relative to the animal's body, causing mechanical impediments to movement, pressure necrosis, ulceration, and secondary infection. Malignant tumors carry additional risks of local invasion, metastasis to internal organs, and paraneoplastic effects that impact systemic health.
Despite the high frequency of tumor development in rats and mice, many skin masses are highly treatable, particularly when detected early and addressed before reaching large sizes. Surgical excision is often curative for benign tumors and can significantly extend quality life even for some malignant types. An exotic veterinarian experienced with small mammal surgery should evaluate any lump or bump discovered on a rat or mouse, as early assessment allows for more treatment options and better outcomes. Owners should understand that while tumors are common in these species, they need not be a death sentence, and many rats live comfortably for extended periods after tumor treatment.
