While chromodacryorrhea itself is not a disease, its presence serves as an important health indicator signaling that the animal is experiencing stress, illness, or environmental problems that warrant investigation.
The Harderian gland is a specialized structure found in rats, mice, and certain other rodents that produces secretions containing porphyrins as a normal metabolic byproduct. Under typical healthy conditions, these porphyrin-rich secretions are produced in small amounts and are spread over the fur during grooming, where they remain largely invisible. When an animal is stressed or unwell, porphyrin production increases significantly, and the gland secretes more than the animal can distribute through normal grooming. The excess accumulates visibly around the eyes and may spread to the nose via the nasolacrimal duct, creating the characteristic red tear appearance.
The significance of chromodacryorrhea lies in what it indicates rather than any harm caused by the secretions themselves. Increased porphyrin secretion signals that something is wrong with the animal's health or environment.
