Pregnancy toxemia, also known as ketosis or pregnancy ketosis, is a life-threatening metabolic emergency that affects pregnant small mammals during the final stages of gestation. This condition develops when the body's energy demands exceed intake, forcing the animal to mobilize body fat for energy at a rate that overwhelms normal metabolic pathways. The resulting accumulation of ketone bodies in the blood creates a toxic state that can rapidly prove fatal to both the mother and developing offspring. Pregnancy toxemia represents one of the most serious complications of pregnancy in susceptible small mammal species.
Guinea pigs are the species most commonly and severely affected by pregnancy toxemia, with the condition representing a major cause of death in pregnant sows. Chinchillas also develop pregnancy toxemia with some frequency, and the condition has been reported in other small mammal species including rabbits, hamsters, and gerbils. The condition most typically occurs during the final two weeks of pregnancy when fetal energy demands are highest, though it can also develop in the immediate postpartum period. First-time mothers, older mothers, and those carrying large litters face elevated risk.
The impact of pregnancy toxemia on health is severe and frequently fatal. Once clinical signs become apparent, the disease has typically progressed significantly and the prognosis is often poor despite aggressive treatment. Affected animals may progress from initial lethargy to collapse, seizures, and death within 24 to 48 hours of symptom onset. The fetuses rarely survive if the mother develops severe toxemia. Even with intensive treatment, mortality rates remain high, making prevention the most important aspect of managing this condition.
Early recognition and immediate veterinary intervention offer the best chance for survival, but even then outcomes are uncertain. Treatment requires emergency supportive care including fluid therapy, nutritional support, and often delivery of the offspring through cesarean section. Because symptoms may be subtle in early stages and prey animals instinctively hide illness, pregnancy toxemia is frequently not recognized until the condition has become critical. Any pregnant small mammal showing decreased appetite, lethargy, or behavioral changes requires urgent evaluation by an exotic veterinarian experienced in small mammal reproductive emergencies.
