This condition begins as mild irritation or pressure sores on the plantar surface of the feet and can progress to severe ulcerative lesions with deep bacterial infection if left untreated. The term bumblefoot originates from the characteristic swelling that can make the foot appear bumble-like in advanced cases, while sore hocks specifically refers to similar lesions on the hock area of the hind limbs.
This condition affects a wide range of small mammal species kept as pets, with rats, guinea pigs, hedgehogs, chinchillas, degus, and rabbits being particularly susceptible. The prevalence varies significantly based on husbandry practices, with animals housed on inappropriate flooring materials experiencing dramatically higher rates. Studies suggest that up to 20-30% of pet rats may develop some degree of pododermatitis during their lifetime, making it one of the most common health issues in these species.
