Pododermatitis, commonly known as bumblefoot or sore hocks, is a progressive inflammatory and infectious condition affecting the foot pads of small mammals. This condition begins when pressure, friction, or abrasion damages the delicate skin on the bottom of the feet, creating entry points for bacteria that then colonize the tissue and establish infection. Left untreated, the infection progresses from superficial inflammation through deepening ulceration, potentially reaching bones and tendons with devastating consequences for the affected animal's mobility and quality of life.
Pododermatitis affects a wide range of small mammal species kept as pets, with rats, guinea pigs, chinchillas, hedgehogs, degus, and other rodents being commonly affected. The condition is strongly associated with husbandry factors, particularly inappropriate cage flooring that places excessive or uneven pressure on foot pads. Wire-bottom cages, rough textured surfaces, and inadequate bedding are frequent contributors. Obesity, inactivity, and poor sanitation further increase risk by compounding pressure damage and providing bacterial contamination.
The impact of bumblefoot on affected animals is substantial, causing pain that interferes with normal movement, eating, and quality of life. Small mammals with painful feet may become reluctant to move around their enclosure, reducing exercise and potentially leading to secondary problems such as obesity and muscle weakness. The chronic pain and stress associated with untreated pododermatitis can affect overall health, suppressing immune function and making animals more susceptible to other illnesses. In severe cases, the infection may become systemic, posing a threat to the animal's life.
When caught early and treated appropriately by an exotic animal veterinarian, pododermatitis can often be resolved, though treatment becomes increasingly difficult as the condition advances. Mild cases may respond to husbandry changes alone, while moderate to severe cases require medical intervention including antibiotic therapy, wound care, and pain management. Crucially, treatment must address the underlying husbandry factors that caused the condition to prevent recurrence and progression. Prevention through appropriate housing and substrate selection is far more effective than treating established disease.
