Infections, including bacterial, viral, or mycoplasmal disease, can cause inflammatory effusions. Tumors in the chest cavity are common in certain species and frequently cause effusion. Other causes include liver disease, kidney disease, low blood protein, and trauma to the chest.
The impact of pleural effusion on respiratory function can range from mild to immediately life-threatening depending on the volume of fluid present and the speed at which it accumulates. Small amounts of fluid may cause minimal symptoms, while large volumes severely restrict lung expansion and cause acute respiratory distress. Because small mammals have limited respiratory reserves due to their small body size and high metabolic rates, even moderate effusions can cause significant compromise. The speed of accumulation matters as well, with rapid accumulation causing more severe symptoms than gradual fluid buildup that allows some compensation.
Treatment of pleural effusion involves both addressing the immediate respiratory compromise through fluid removal and diagnosing and treating the underlying cause. Thoracocentesis, the procedure of draining fluid from the chest cavity, provides immediate relief and yields fluid for diagnostic analysis. Long-term management depends entirely on the underlying cause, with prognosis ranging from good to grave depending on the nature of the primary disease.
