The constriction at the preputial opening prevents normal blood flow, leading to progressive tissue damage that can become irreversible within hours.
This condition can affect virtually any male small mammal species, though it is particularly well-documented in chinchillas, where it is often associated with fur ring formation around the penis. Guinea pigs, hamsters, rats, mice, gerbils, and other rodent species can also develop paraphimosis, though the underlying causes may vary between species.
