Ferrets are extraordinarily prone to pancreatic tumors, with insulinoma affecting an estimated 20-25% of ferrets over four years of age. This makes insulinoma one of the three most common diseases in middle-aged to older ferrets, alongside adrenal disease and lymphoma. Other small mammals including hamsters, rats, and occasionally guinea pigs may also develop pancreatic tumors, though these occur with considerably less frequency than in ferrets. Insulinomas cause excessive insulin secretion, leading to dangerously low blood sugar levels that affect brain function and overall energy. Affected animals may experience weakness, lethargy, confusion, tremors, and in severe cases, seizures and collapse. The episodic nature of symptoms can make early recognition challenging, as animals may appear normal between hypoglycemic events. Exocrine pancreatic tumors, while less common, can cause digestive disturbances, weight loss, and abdominal discomfort.
Early detection and appropriate management by an exotic veterinarian experienced in small mammal medicine significantly improves outcomes for animals with pancreatic tumors. While complete cure is rarely achieved, many animals can be maintained with good quality of life for months to years with proper medical management and, in some cases, surgical intervention. Treatment protocols have advanced considerably, offering hope for affected animals and their caregivers. However, the progressive nature of these tumors means ongoing monitoring and treatment adjustments are typically necessary throughout the animal's remaining life.
