In small mammals, osteomyelitis presents significant treatment challenges due to the difficulty of achieving adequate antimicrobial penetration into bone tissue and the limited surgical options available given these animals' small body size.
Small mammals at elevated risk for osteomyelitis include rats, which are prone to injuries that can introduce infection, and hedgehogs, whose common foot problems including bumblefoot can progress to bone involvement. Any species can develop osteomyelitis following bite wounds from cage mates, injuries from cage materials, or complications from dental disease. The small size of these animals means that what might be a minor wound in a larger species can involve bone relatively quickly, and the rapid metabolic rate accelerates infection progression.
The impact of osteomyelitis on affected small mammals extends beyond localized bone damage. Chronic infection causes persistent pain that significantly impairs quality of life. Systemic spread of bacteria can lead to sepsis, a life-threatening condition. Bone destruction may result in pathological fractures or permanent deformity. The prolonged treatment required to address bone infection causes ongoing stress to the animal. In severe cases, amputation may be necessary to control infection, though this option carries its own challenges in small mammals.
Early detection and aggressive treatment are essential for successful management of osteomyelitis in small mammals. An exotic veterinarian experienced in small mammal medicine should evaluate any wound that might involve bone, any swelling or lameness that persists despite initial treatment, and any signs of systemic illness. Treatment typically requires weeks to months of antimicrobial therapy, often combined with surgical intervention. Despite aggressive treatment, osteomyelitis in small mammals can be difficult to cure completely, and some cases progress despite best efforts. Prevention through safe housing, prompt wound care, and appropriate dental management remains the most effective approach.
