This mange mite is closely related to Notoedres cati, which causes mange in cats, and Sarcoptes scabiei, the causative agent of scabies in humans and various animals, sharing similar pathogenic mechanisms and clinical presentations.
Notoedres muris infestation occurs primarily in rats maintained in suboptimal conditions, with prevalence particularly high in overcrowded environments, rescue situations, and facilities with inadequate sanitation. While this mite was historically common in both wild and captive rat populations, improvements in husbandry practices have reduced its prevalence in well-managed breeding colonies and pet situations. However, it remains an important condition to recognize because it causes significant suffering when present and can spread rapidly through rat colonies if not promptly addressed.
The clinical impact of Notoedres muris infestation is considerable, as the burrowing behavior of these mites creates intense pruritis (itching) and progressive skin damage that significantly impairs affected rats' quality of life. Early lesions appear as small, crusty areas on the ears, nose, and tail, but without treatment, the condition progresses to produce thickened, distorted, and severely crusted skin that can spread to cover much of the body.
