Metritis is an acute bacterial infection and inflammation of the uterine wall that occurs most commonly in the post-partum period following birth in small mammals. This serious condition develops when bacteria contaminate the uterus during or after delivery, establishing infection in the traumatized and vulnerable uterine tissue. Unlike the chronic uterine condition pyometra, metritis presents as an acute, rapidly progressive infection that can lead to sepsis and death within hours to days if not treated aggressively. The condition represents a true medical emergency in small mammals given their small body reserves and rapid metabolic rate.
This condition primarily affects female small mammals in the immediate period following birth, typically developing within the first few days to two weeks post-partum. Rats, mice, guinea pigs, hamsters, and other small mammals are all susceptible, with risk factors related to the circumstances of delivery rather than species-specific predisposition. Difficult or prolonged labor, retained fetuses or placentas, and unsanitary birthing conditions dramatically increase metritis risk. The condition occasionally occurs unrelated to recent pregnancy in animals with pre-existing uterine abnormalities or after breeding attempts that introduce bacterial contamination.
The impact of metritis on affected small mammals is severe and potentially fatal. The infected uterus becomes a source of toxins and bacteria that spread systemically, causing septicemia that overwhelms the body's defenses. Affected mothers become severely ill, unable to care for newborn offspring who may also perish from neglect, starvation, or hypothermia. Even with treatment, some animals succumb to overwhelming infection. Those who survive may experience permanent reproductive damage, making future breeding inadvisable or impossible.
Emergency veterinary intervention is essential for any small mammal suspected of having metritis. The rapid progression of this condition means that delays of even several hours can prove fatal in small mammals with limited physiologic reserves. Treatment typically involves aggressive antibiotic therapy, supportive care, and frequently emergency spay surgery to remove the infected uterus. Working with an exotic veterinarian experienced in small mammal reproductive emergencies provides the best chance for survival. Owners of breeding small mammals should be aware of this potential complication and prepared to seek immediate care if post-partum mothers show signs of illness.
