The condition occurs much less frequently in other small mammal species, though isolated cases have been reported in hamsters, rats, and occasionally other rodents. Cardiovascular effects include rapid heart rate and potential heart enlargement, which can progress to heart failure if left untreated. Behavioral changes, gastrointestinal disturbances, and coat condition deterioration further diminish quality of life as the condition advances.
Early detection and appropriate treatment of hyperthyroidism can significantly improve outcomes for affected small mammals. Because prey animals instinctively hide signs of illness, owners must remain vigilant for subtle changes that might indicate developing thyroid dysfunction. Treatment requires working with an exotic veterinarian experienced in small mammal endocrinology, as diagnosis and management differ from approaches used in more commonly treated species like cats. With appropriate care, many affected animals can achieve good quality of life and reasonable longevity despite their diagnosis.
